Both sites for the proposed new Tesco Express stores in Weston-super-Mare are less than a mile from, and within easy walking distance of the main Tesco store in the centre of town, so why are they needed?

Anyone choosing to shop at Tesco would have a much greater choice at the larger town centre store, so why would they bother shopping at a Tesco Express?

Neither of the proposed areas are lacking in shops for grocery shopping, so it is not necessary to have a new Tesco convenience store there.

I regularly use the local shops in Whitecross Road. It is a thriving local community with a local co-op and independent shops - butcher, baker, greengrocer, chemist, newsagent, florist and more, offering local produce, of excellent quality at reasonable prices without the excess packaging found in Tesco. The queues are far shorter than in Tesco and you are always greeted with a friendly smile. It is possible to buy all the groceries you need there without going into the town centre.

Anyone who likes to have a choice of where they can shop, cares about their carbon footprint and local employment for local people should say "No" to Tesco, before it is too late.

I am not anti Tesco, I do use their main town store. However, if they want to expand, perhaps they should consider putting Tesco Expresses in rural villages which no longer have a shop or are about to loose the Post Office which is the only shop they have.

Tescos are certainly over doing things in Weston-super-Mare, and with the potential damage to existing stores, especially the co-op convenience store in Whitcross Road which has been there for many years.

Tesco are getting greedly, not content with their large superstore in the centre of Town.

Tesco already has prime position in our town with an ever increasing range of non food products destroying other independent businesses. I do not wish to shop in there because it takes too long to find the food, its original purpose. More stores, especially close to small independents will lead to closure of them and the raking in of more and more profits for them. They should be stopped.

As Chair of Churchill and Langford Minibus Society I regularly bring elderly
people to shop in the main Tesco store in Weston but that is ENOUGH.
I do not want to see our town taken over by a greedy supermarket.
BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT TESCO!

One more thing, I've just seen that you say the council won't be able to turn down the application. Don't you believe it! We were told the same thing because the site is already a shop, but did the research and found many grounds for refusing permission for the extension and a/c plant they needed. It suits pretty much everyone except local residents to say that that the application can't be turned down - that way no-one faces the wrath of Tesco but they also get to avoid annoying local taxpayers/voters - it makes for a quieter life. I bet you a can of Tesco value beans you can find solid planning grounds for refusal (loser gets the beans).

Greetings from Cambridge too! We are in the middle of a campaign to stop a Tesco Express moving to Mill Road in Cambridge (there are already 7 Tesco stores in Cambridge). The council knocked back Tesco's application in March and we are now fighting an appeal and another application by Tesco. All our plannning documents are on our website, if they are of any use to you, and email us if we can help in any way.

It might also be worth taking a look at Sunninghill, who managed to get a Tesco Express application thrown out last week.

Fraternal greeting and support from St Albans Stop Tesco! Hope your campaign isn't as long as ours - but drop us a line if you've any questions (although as a Lib Dem you should probably get in touch with our PPC Sandy Walkington first!).

Tesco is the most irritating, depressing and greedy shops that I have ever been into. Putting it plain and simply, we just don't need so many! I feel far happier shopping with local businesses.

I'm a Tesco customer; I use your main store in Weston, both for myself and with a minubus load of rural pensioners every fortnight. So I'm not against Tesco per se, and appreciate the convenience of your in-town store. However, I support the petition against the opening of further convenience stores in locations where other provision already exists. That smacks of empire building, and of reducing consumer choice. If this kind of thing is Tesco's policy, I might even have to start shopping elsewhere - while I still do have the choice.
